A leading and well-established Information Management Company in the global oil and gas industry seeks a Data Engineer. Working at an Oil Operator site, you will create, manage and maintain data pipelines for production data within the Foundry and Azure platforms. Applicants are invited with strong coding and proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, or similar languages essential (especially Python is of key interest). Previous oil and gas experience of interest but not essential. This is a 6 month contract initially, but could be extended. This is an exciting role working for a major oil operator who are actively optimising their subsurface information management workflows and deliverables to their user communities across their global offices.

The oil operator’s vision is for all Upstream production data to be contextualised, accessible, verified and quality assured against agreed data requirements, consistently managed and maintained globally and made automatically available to Engineers and Scientists within their strategic analytical tools. The Subsurface production domain team, provides data support, including data governance, data stewardship and data curation (i.e. creation to archived for posterity), for production data across Upstream, in 10 regions globally.

Working as part of the Production Domain central team, you will:
  • Create, manage and maintain data pipelines for data within the Foundry and Azure platforms in line with domain strategy.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the data pipeline from the data historians (systems of record), Upstream Data Lake (UDL) to Foundry
  • Help the production domain team build out Upstream datasets within Foundry, at pace and scale, to enable analytics
  • Work with Palantir and Upstream IT&S to ensure the data pipelines are working and any problems within Foundry are reported and closed out
  • Create apps, tools and techniques to QC, manage and maintain data integrations and proactively manage and maintain the data pipeline from the Upstream Data Lake (UDL) to Foundry, ensuring the Production Domain are alerted should there be any problems with the data pipeline
  • Manage stakeholder relationships with UDL team, IT&S, Base Management and other 3rd party support teams as required
  • The Deliverables are:
    • Create, curate and maintain data sets for strategic Upstream data within Foundry and Azure
    • Ensure Upstream data is being correctly ingested into Foundry
    • Develop and implement data QC apps and tools to monitor and maintain the data flow and data pipelines
    • Manage, update and simplify data integrations within Foundry, ensuring data continues to flow to the business-critical applications and tools
    • Provide guidance to the oil operator staff as required
  • An academic background in IT, Data Management or Systems highly advantageous.
  • Strong coder with demonstrated proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C++, Python, JavaScript, or similar languages essential (especially Python)
  • Enthusiasm for Big Data and analytics
  • Ability to write clean, effective code and learn new languages quickly
  • Previous experience working with the Foundry or/and Azure platforms advantageous.
  • Experience working in the Oil and Gas industry advantageous but not essential.
  • Experience of Production Data advantageous but not essential.
  • Experience of the Palantir software suite advantageous.
  • Ability to work effectively in teams of technical and non-technical individuals.
  • Skill and comfort working in a rapidly changing environment with dynamic objectives and iteration with users.
  • Familiarity with data structures, storage systems, cloud infrastructure, front-end frameworks, and other technical tools.
  • Understanding of how technical decisions impact the user of what you’re building.
  • Happy working in a fast-paced changing environment
  • Willingness and ability to learn new scripting languages essential
  • Self-starter, team player and proactive approach essential
  • Ability (and willingness) to use new analytical tools and techniques
  • Ability to clearly communicate at the technical level with IT&S and 3rd parties
  • Strong appreciation for good stakeholder management essential - experience working across different stakeholders in an oil operator desired.
  • Highly articulate - able to convey technical content in a coherent manner.
  • Excellent personal skills – ability to work in a team and support other members.
  • Highly methodical - ability to multi-task, prioritise, with attention to detail but constantly paying attention to the bigger picture.
