A manufacturing start-up that specialises in low-temperature synthesis of carbon nanotubes seeks a HSE Manager to implement Health, Safety and Environmental protection processes across all business functions. You will be responsible for occupational safety and for ensuring that the product complies with ATEX directives (i.e. relating to equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres) and Environmental and Safety legislation. Applicants are invited with a degree (Physical Sciences preferred) combined with a minimum of 10 years HSE experience. This is a great opportunity for an individual looking to make their mark on an exciting new start up.

The Company started 10 years ago and was set up by scientists from a well-known university institute that specialises in the manufacture of plasma thin film deposition tools. The ultimate goal of the company is to develop systems that allow for the commercialisation of nanomaterials produced at low temperature. These materials are produced for the Aerospace and Defence, Aesthetics, Consumer Goods, Membrane filtration and Semiconductor sectors.

With 20 people currently employed, the Company are rapidly growing and successfully launched their latest product (a high-emissivity “super-black” coating) and are now looking at establishing production capability for this.
This role encompasses many functions including:
  • Become competent in the Company’s business matters, work flows and practices.
  • Develop, implement and maintain Health and Safety processes for all business functions.
  • Manage the delivery of a Safe working environment.
  • Ensure all regulatory requirements regarding Health, Safety and Environmental Protection are exceeded.
  • Manage compliance and corrective action programs.
  • Effectively manage risk associated with the handling, storage and use of hazardous chemicals and solvents.
  • Undertake risk assessments and the implementation of Safe Operating Practices for advance production and development equipment.
The successful candidate will have:
  • A degree in Physical Sciences or equivalent essential.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ HSE experience essential.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of H&S management processes essential.
  • Experience of HSE in automotive, consumer electronic, automation or spray-processing sectors essential.
  • Relevant knowledge in management of gas, chemical and mechanical hazards and applicable standards/norms (e.g. DSEAR – essential /ATEX - highly advantageous).
  • Experience in securing and maintaining permits with external agencies and authorities, including REACH and planning (hazardous Substances) regulations essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver required behaviours to achieve and maintain zero accidents essential.
  • COMAH knowledge desired.
  • Ability to identify and manage risk essential.
  • Knowledge of risk assessment methods and project management essential.
  • Ability to rapidly produce thorough, concise and factual reports essential.
  • IT literate – a proficient user of Microsoft Office applications essential.
  • Self-driven with strong time-management skills, the ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment essential.
  • Excellent verbal communications skills essential, with the ability to listen and discuss matters in a clear and articulate manner.
  • Strong problem solving ability.
  • Strong organisation skills and a methodical approach to all work essential.
  • Proactive and flexible with the ability to work independently to achieve goals.
