Job Overview: A fast growing Business Intelligence Group seeks to recruit a Global Head of Exploration and Appraisal for their subscription based, Research and Analysis Services. You will take responsibility for all aspects of the research output for these services. Applicants are invited with a minimum of 15 years’ E&P industry experience, and a passion for understanding the players, trends, technologies used and the exploration and appraisal activities globally. Their global exploration performance service is recognised across the E&P sector for its unique benchmarking and briefing reports, providing in-depth analysis and insight to clients. The reports are used across the energy sector to provide strategic insight and guidance to individual company work programmes and to the finance community to aid investment decisions.

In this senior role, you will lead a team of analysts and initiate research, write and edit detailed and insightful analysis, provide commentary on trends within the sector, and ensure efficient intelligence gathering and accountability for maintaining key proprietary databases. You will participate directly in the commercial operations of the company and in its strategic direction for growth and market share.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Upstream Research, the role encompasses many functions including:
  • Lead and manage the technical content of the Company’s research products and services, with a particular focus on their services relating to global exploration performance information.
  • Create content for reporting products: Monthly reports, research briefings and the annual exploration performance report.
  • Maintain an awareness of current activity in the E&P sector and ensure that the Company’s products are current, accurate and insightful.
  • Work with software designers to develop and maintain the Company databases, minimising operational risks to the business.
  • Become the focal point for client enquires - attend regular client meetings, providing insights and advice on all matters E&P.
  • Be the lead for bespoke projects for specific clients; staffing and managing the appropriate team to deliver a high quality product.
  • Be proactive in raising awareness and reputation of the Group - attending conference, exhibitions, presenting papers, leading discussions etc.
  • Build a network of company connections and experienced industry individuals to assist in understanding market trends and developments and to provide reputable commentary and support.
  • Work with the Sales Team in generating new business opportunities – support the sales cycle by regular engagement with clients and by providing high level technical meetings, networking, etc.
  • Supervise junior analysts; coach, mentor, delegate work and conduct performance reviews.
  • Build good working relationships within your team and the wider Group members to assist in the development and enhancement of the Group’s product and service offerings and to deepen analysis, insight and product differentiation.
  • Working closely with the “President of Research”, develop, maintain and ensure delivery of the strategic E&P business plan.

Preferences: The successful candidate will have:
  • Degree to Master's level or above in a Petroleum Geoscience subject preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years' experience in the upstream E&P sector essential, either in exploration or as a commercial analyst with a geoscience background.
  • Previous experience working with an oil operator in exploration and appraisal activities highly desired.
  • Broad-based, E&P company experience essential with particularly understanding of company exploration strategies, geopolitics and global trends.
  • International experience in exploration and appraisal activities desired.
  • Proven experience in managing a small focused team (direct report or project basis) essential.
  • Strong commercial acumen essential – must have the ability to understand the commercial subtleties of the E&A world and identify and help drive business opportunities.
  • Highly analytic essential - a good understanding of E&P valuation metrics and methods desired.
  • Proactive in the E&P industry essential – have an established network, good understanding of the players, the current exploration technologies, trends, challenges, constraints, etc.
  • A demonstrated ability to generate original high quality E&P research essential.
  • Highly personable with an engaging, charismatic and trusting manner – you will liaise with a large stakeholder group – e.g. oil operators, oilfield service companies, analytical community, peers globally etc.
  • A strong team player with excellent managerial skills – ability to motivate staff, transfer skills and knowledge, lead from example...
  • Highly strategic – can see the bigger picture and drive company objectives for growth.
  • Excellent verbal, writing and communication skills essential – the ability to create compelling content for external audiences; to simplify and communicate complex technical issues to clients; to provide independent opinions/reviews on research projects...
  • Highly diplomatic across all stakeholders.
  • A good understanding and practical experience in data handling and analysis. Experience of GIS software and relational databases would be an advantage.
  • Excellent client facing skills - become the go-to-person.
  • Ability to work independently to meet project deadlines.
  • Ability to travel – bi-annual visits to US for meeting, and global travel for conference etc.
Other Information
Package: A Salary in the region of £100K - £125K dependent on skills and experience, plus Bonus and a Benefits Package (e.g. Health, Vision, Dental Insurance, Flexible vacation and work schedule, generous vacation/leave policy...). This is a senior level role and as such there is a potential for equity in the Company.
