A major global engineering and design service provider seeks a Principal Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to oversee multiple Instrumentation leads across multiple projects. You will also be responsible for providing technical oversight, staffing coordination, business unit proposal support, mentoring / development of entry level personnel, and general department coordination. You may be assigned as a Discipline Technical Authority (DTA) or as a Subject Matter Expert (SME). Applicants invited with a minimum of 20 years’ experience in Instrumentation in the oil/gas, hydrocarbon offshore industry. You should be recognized as an instrumentation/controls specialist in a on large to mega offshore projects. Working on a Tax Free, Expat residential permanent role, you will be exposed to a great opportunity to develop your specific expertise working across various stakeholders on high value projects. This role is offered in adherence with Saudi Labour Law and therefore these positions are only open to Males and under the age of 59.

The Company employs 5000+ people and formed in 2009 from the integration of two of the Kingdom’s engineering companies. They provide engineering, project management, procurement and construction management solutions for Oil/Gas, Pipelines, Healthcare, Waste and Wastewater, Petrochemical etc.

Al-Khobar is a large city located in the Eastern Province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the coast of the Persian Gulf and is linked to Bahrain via the causeway.

This is a residential permanent position (i.e. not rotational) and the Company provides 22 – 28 days holiday (depending on grade) plus you are entitled to all of the Saudi Public holidays (circa 10 - 14 days). The Company will provide accommodation for single or family status in a secure compound. They will organise all mobilisation / demobilisation transport and you will be entitled to 2 flights home per year.

Due to visa restrictions within Saudi, there is a preference for American, Canadian and British nationals.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Developing the Instrument and Control portion of P&ID’s.
  • Creating and managing the Instrument Index database.
  • Specifying and selecting field instruments to meet performance criteria.
  • Instrument Sizing calculations (Control Valves, Relief Valves, Flow Elements, and thermowell vibration calculations.
  • Specifying, selecting and purchasing all Instrumentation.
  • Specifying, selecting and purchasing all Process Control Systems and Safety systems.
  • Undertaking functional design and defining the requirements of the Process Control Logic and Safety logic.
  • Creating and managing instrumentation scope work for projects.
  • Integrating packaged equipment into overall system design.
  • Overseeing development of detailed design drawings including Instrument Plans, Details, Wiring, Loops, and Fabrication Drawings.
  • Communicating with the Project Management team and Client to ensure that requirements are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Developing and maintaining labour and material estimates for projects.
  • Developing and maintaining instrumentation progress, schedule, staffing planning, and coordination with project management including regular reporting.
  • Providing proposal support for multiple proposals simultaneously.
  • Generating department administrative and technical standards and procedures
  • Training and mentoring of junior instrumentation staff
  • Coordinating with the project discipline lead engineers to ensure correct implementation of the design and coordinating the work of engineers.
  • Preparing and reviewing engineering studies, design drawings and documents, and material and equipment specifications. Resolving specialty related engineering issues by applying accepted principles, codes, and standards.
  • You may be assigned as a Discipline Technical Authority (DTA); a person identified as an overall technically competent team member able to address technically complex issues & mentor team members with their technical work.
  • You may be assigned as a Subject Matter Expert (SME); a person recognized to possess a high degree of knowledge on a particular subject and/or piece of equipment.
  • Keeping abreast of emerging trends and technologies within your relevant field.
The successful candidate will have
  • Full time degree (no long distance learning degrees) in Engineering essential. Degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • A minimum of 20 years’ Instrumentation experience within the Oil and Gas, Refining, or Chemical Industry essential.
  • Recognition as specialist in instrumentation/controls on large to mega projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering practices and economic principles, calculation methods, design details, international codes and standards, procedures, and specifications essential.
  • Knowledge of INtools / SPI 2013 Intergraph product including capability to prepare Instrument Sizing Calculations, Instrument Index, Specification Sheets and Cable Schedules essential.
  • Knowledge of specialist Instrumentation engineering software and general business software essential.
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards applicable to Oil and Gas and Refining Industries (API, ISA, NEC / IEC, NFPA, ASME, etc.) essential.
  • Previous experience working in Saudi or the Middle East advantageous.
  • Ability to make independent decisions in the planning, organizing and coordination of solutions to complex problems.
  • Competent with the ability to lead a team of discipline engineers and provide engineering support.
  • Enthusiasm and drive to stay abreast of new trends and technologies in your field.
  • Proactive, flexible and dedicated team player, able to achieve goals.
  • Enjoys working in a multidisciplinary team essential.
  • Excellent communication skills in English with the ability to engage and work effectively with team players from various cultures.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop good working relationships and to provide advice and guidance on your area of expertise essential.
  • Valid driving license of Saudi or country of origin highly advantageous.
  • Ability and willingness to travel offshore as necessary.
  • Ability to lift and carry things whilst offshore.
