Overview
A leading provider of navigation systems for offshore seismic acquisition seeks a Software Support Engineer to install, commission and support products in offshore survey environments worldwide. When not in the field, you will be responsible for office-based client support, system commissioning and testing, client training and support documentation. Applicants are invited with previous experience as a field engineer combined with practical Linux and networking experience. Due to the nature of the role, you will be expected to travel away from home for variable amounts of time. Great opportunity to travel.

The Company is highly technology driven and committed to solving the toughest problems in geophysical exploration for the oil and gas industry. They work closely with both Exploration and Production operators and seismic acquisition contractors to identify innovative solutions that resolve their global operational and imaging challenges. Their products and services range from acquisition and navigation systems to survey design and management.

With the industry emerging from a downturn, the Company is in discussions with clients regarding new project demands. The Company envisage that they would initially need one individual for a 6-8 week work contract commencing in summer 2017. Should the increase in the workload be sustained then they will require permanent staff. Responsibilities
Reporting to System Support Manager this role encompasses many functions including:
  • Become competent in the Company’s suite of solutions, services, work flows and practices.
  • Provide customers with onsite technical support.
  • Assist with new field installations.
  • Support and maintain existing systems in the field.
  • Troubleshoot problems and report appropriately.
  • Liaise with clients as necessary.
  • Attend to incoming customer support queries.
  • Assist with the setup, commissioning and testing of systems, prior to their deployment in the field.
  • Configure in-house support, test and training equipment.
  • Set up, run and troubleshoot field simulations.
  • Liaise with development teams, training and technical writing team to assist with updating manuals, documentation and procedures.
  • Deliver product training and/or specialist skills training where appropriate
This is an exciting role for a highly motivated field engineer looking to take the next step into the installation and upgrading of on-board systems. The role would suit an individual who has good technical navigational system expertise, happy to work away from home and has strong client facing skills.
 
Preferences
The successful candidate will have:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical or numerate subject preferred.
  • Previous experience as a Field Engineer highly advantageous.
  • Ability to pass offshore fitness, medical and safety training essential.
  • Previous practical experience of Linux (command line) and networking essential.
  • Experience of GPS, data radio systems, surveying and/or navigation highly advantageous.
  • Knowledge of data communications and basic electrical/electronic engineering desired.
  • Programming or scripting skills(e.g. Unix, Shell, Perl, XML, SQL) advantageous.
  • Strong problem solving skills essential.
  • Experience in the installation, configuration and integration of software packages advantageous.
  • Previous experience in a customer facing role highly desired.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to produce consistently high quality work.
  • Good analytical skills essential. The ability to apply these skills to systems and processes is key.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills – must be able to develop and maintain good working relationships, and converse with individuals at various technical levels.
  • Ability to work under pressure in demanding and sometimes harsh operational environments.
  • Strong organisation skills essential. The ability to manage and prioritise workloads.
  • Proactive, and a dedicated team player with the ability to work independently and a willingness to approach problems as opportunities for improvement.
  • Flexible in working patterns - long hours may be required whilst offshore.
  • Willingness to travel and work offshore – you may be required to be in the field for extended periods where conditions are remote and demanding.
